Myth: Teething Causes Fevers

When it comes to baby teething ๐Ÿฆท symptoms, there’s a lot of conflicting information out there. One of the most common myths we encounter is that teething causes fevers๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Not only is that not true ๐Ÿคฏ, but it can also be a harmful misconception

  • If your baby has a fever (a rectal temperature >100.4 F in an infant) - something elseโ— is going on.
  • It may be a virus or mild illness, but don't โœ‹ assume it's teething

Why does the myth exist?

Timing ๐Ÿ•—

  • Most (but not all) babies get their first tooth between 6๏ธโƒฃ and ๐Ÿ”Ÿ months of age.
  • During this same time in an ๐Ÿ‘ถ infant's life, the immunity they received from mom during pregnancy wears off.
  • Infants this age start to get mobile and explore the world ๐ŸŒ - which exposes them to a wide variety of childhood illnesses and ๐Ÿฆ  germs.
  • Due to this coincidence of timing, teething often is blamed for sick symptoms such as changes in stool patterns, runny nose, and ๐Ÿ™Š FEVERS!

Summary: Teething can cause drooling and fussiness. Teething will NOT cause ๐Ÿค’ fevers > 100.4.
